Play therapy is an evidence based approach geared to help children in the therapy room as play is their most natural language. This approach has been successful in helping children learn the skills needed to regulate their emotions in order to help them flourish and heal. Professional training in play therapy and EMDR has provided Shannon the knowledge and skills to work with children struggling with a wide range of concerns. Shannon primarily works with ages 5 and above.
Play allows children to express their thoughts and feelings in a more secure and natural way when verbal expression is difficult. To adults, this might just look like playing, but to them they are able to reveal their inner world where it is more comfortable to navigate the possibilities of working through their struggles. Play therapy can help children make sense of events they have been exposed to that were bothersome and confusing. Play can also improve self-esteem by mastering skills and practice problem solving in a fun and less threatening way. With providing a safe environment, children are able to explore their thoughts, feelings and experiences to transfer new behaviors and coping skills into every day life.
Shannon has been working with adolescents for close to 10 years and recognizes the unique transitional stage that teenagers are navigating today. Adolescents need an unbiased therapist that can provide a safe listening space, allowing your teen to feel in control of their counseling process by meeting them where they are at each session. At times, this approach may be directive and solutions-focused. Other times this may mean being a sounding board for their worries and stress. Shannon is passionate about helping young people become their best in order to cultivate constructive relationships with their families and peers.
No matter what your story or struggle, there is hope, even when at times it can be difficult to see. Some problems in your life may feel tolerable whereas others feel overwhelming and unmanageable. Regardless of the intensity, severity, and frequency of your problem, no issue is too small or too big to benefit from therapy. Shannon is committed to partnering with you in your journey to help you uncover compassion for yourself as you gain greater clarity on your ideal self and where you want to go in order to have a long term impact.
